Stockton-on-Tees

Stockton-on-Tees, a North-East England town with 85,000 residents (2021), is in County Durham. It has always been an industrial town, straddling the River Tees. Stockton became part of Cleveland in 1974. Stockton was returned to County Durham after it was abolished. The southern rural district of Yarm was reassigned to North Yorkshire.

Early in the 19th century, the Tees was straightened to allow larger ships access to the town. Since then, the ports have moved closer to the North Sea. Ships are no longer allowed to sail to the town from the sea due to the Tees Barrage which was built to control tidal floods. Stockton and Darlington Railway served the port in the early Industrial Revolution. Coal was transported to the town by the railway for shipment. The railway was also the world's first permanent steam-locomotive-powered passenger railway.
